I completely agree....BUT...ATT has only gotten about 2 million more subscribers out of the whole deal, which is nothing, really. Also, as I tried to clarify on FB when this was posted there, I didn't mean that it would be called the "Verizon iPhone." Not at all. After all, it's still a Blackberry from Verizon, not a Verizonberry or whatever.

But this is an iPhone, that happens to be carried by ATT. That's how Apple wanted it to be.

Verizon made a mistake by leaning too hard and too long on its huge wireless network and install base. That's why they are putting smartphones out like mad right now. But I still think that Apple's crazy plans on how things should be priced and how the revenues should work out forced a lot of hands.

well, if "work" paid for it then that's the same as my paying for it - it's my own budget. And where would I even find an EDGE one...? That's 1st gen, yes? I will likely get the Droid when it comes out.

The new "Via" instant coffee from Starbucks really is very good -- I would say the best instant coffee I ever had. I've only tried the dark variety. If you make it with 8 oz. of water, it is a pretty good cup of coffee. I've made it at the office and was very happy. I can also see using it when traveling, because those in-room coffee makers (if you get one anymore) usually make coffee that is too weak for my taste.

Oh, to live in California. Here in Richmond VA they recycle plastics #1 and #2 only, and just bottles, no other types of plastic containers. I miss living in Charlottesville where you could drive your own recycling to the center and sort it into huge containers that were put straight onto trucks. You had to separate glass by color, and office paper from flat cardboard and egg boxes, and that always made me confident that it would actually be recycled.

As for the separating, I guess they trusted that anyone who would drive to the recycling center would be conscientious enough to separate it properly.

Was the car small? Maybe she meant downsizing her car and its environmental impact. Seems like downsizing has expanded from just the corporate meaning to other aspects of life like houses and cars.

yes, lat/long. I can program that into my particular GPS (TomTom) so if it has some obscure address it can still find it by way of the coordinates.

So far, the drive up was beautiful. Fog rolled in but it is Oregon :-)

Are you talking about lat/long? I think Mapquest used to have a feature that would calculate that. If you're just looking to write them down ahead of time, you don't need to stick with Google Maps, right?

Have a great time! I had planned to drive up through the Willamette Valley when I drove out west, but we had to change our plans so we only got up the California coast before we had to turn east again. It's a great time of year for berries and Oregon is a great place to get them.

Sometimes feedback is painful, but don't take the word of one person or organization as gospel. Perhaps it's time for a break, but if you truly enjoy it and are making money at it, stay with it in the long run! Maybe the WEDDINGS you are photographing are too "standard" in terms of setting, style, etc...

Like Debbie, I've been there. This is my last quarter, so I do see the end of the tunnel, and so will you. Full time job + new born + MBA. It's been tough.

Debbie has a very good advice--cutting back on activities. You will get your social life back!

Yeah, I agree there are too many posts to sort through to get at the meat of this idea, so I am currently writing one larger tutorial/document that will take people through the whole process step-by-step. Hopefully this will cut down on all my noise :)

Been there! I was working full time, newly married, directing my church choir, and going to school for my MBA part-time for 3 years at Case Western Reserve (a one hour drive one way from my house). I had never been a 4.0 student, but decided I wanted to try for that with my MBA program, so that meant even more "above and beyond" to meet that goal.

My advice: you MUST force yourself to keep on track and DON'T STOP. Keep the goal in mind and you WILL get done and you WILL be happy you did it!

Drop any extra activities you can, take some sick or personal days to study or recoup if you must, and push through. Oh, and plan something super fantastic to do when you are done! My husband and I planned a one month trip to Europe for the summer I finished (he had the fall semester to complete yet). It was his first trip abroad and we had a blast!

Just hang in there - and keep us posted!

Hey Kaiyen,

I don't know of a cure. I know my mom has had sleep apnea for years (not sure when she actually was diagnosed with this). All I can do is say prayers for you that you are cured of this. A good night's sleep is important. I pray that you get at least 4 hours tonight!

Ack! Hope you are able to get some rest - and soon. Afrin nose spray works wonders for me when I am congested. I can't STAND not being able to breather properly - and with apnea, it's even more important to stay unblocked!

DH is going to South Africa and Kenya for 6 weeks this summer with Teachers Without Borders Canada. I'm excited for him, jealous, and only worried when I think about it too much! For whatever reason, I'm not really worired about South Africa. But everything we read about where he'll be in Kenya describes the area as "as far as you can get from civilization and still be on the planet earth!" And this happening to a guy who doesn't like camping. T'will be interesting!

As I said, I wasn't particular articulate last night. The point is more about the fact that it's tiring to always being meeting new people and seeking out new faces. Others don't seek them out at times, so I'm the one shouldering my way into discussions, etc. There is definite growth, and I go to conferences more for the networking than anything else. But it is tiring, and not having a safety net of people that I know makes things even harder.

When I go to CM conferences, I usually go with other consultants and friends. But to get the most for our money and time, we almost always have to make a pact to "break up" and go seek out new faces and voices. Even though it's nice to attend with people you know, sometimes the growth comes from that "out of the box" networking.

Two points:

1. Consumption ISN'T bad in an of itself, when those consuming have the means to do so. Your friend is so very right, though. But fter 9/11, when savings rates were already dangerously low, Bush told everyone to go spend, spend, spend to keep us out of a recession. I was shocked, dismayed, and convinced he was wrong. We upped our saving in the midst of everyone else's spending sprees. I believe Bush's admonition - and people's willingness to follow his irresponsible directive - set us up quite nicely for this deeper recession/possible depression.

2. Yes, more spending theoretically means more taxes. And you will hear arguments from big business that the US already has more taxes than most developed countries. But big business usually fails to mention that the US also has the most loopholes of any developed country, so businesses end up paying FEWER taxes than almost anywhere else in the world. I just read today that there is a difference of over $300 billion between what is taxed and what is actually owed when the hoops are jumped through. It sure makes it convenient for both parties, who only tell the side of the story that most resonates with their constituents.

Well, the MBA office is quite blunt that no one will really care about whether one has successfully completed a concentration or not, so I'm not concerned about that professionally. They tell us it's really for helping us design our class schedules more than anything else. And almost everyone agrees that having management skills is useful and critically important but I just feel...less "cool" when I don't say I'm going after a finance concentration :-).

4.0! Nice. I'm at 3.8 and far enough that no matter how I score from now on I have too many units in to really pull that up...:-(

Well, maybe this time I do want to kid myself just a bit. Even if one looks at a CEO of an "energy" company like Exxon in a cynical light, as one who is after just shareholder value and nothing else, then realistically even such a person should realize that the push towards new sources of energy is going to happen. Being left behind is a bad idea. Now, that doesn't explain why the CEO's of other companies aren't also allocating money towards "exploration." And I also wonder whether exploration might not be a better word than research. Unless Exxon is trying to build new, more affordable photo-voltaic cells it's really about figuring out where to put a solar farm, for instance, then researching the technologies behind it.

Just being a bit optimistic. These days that's not so bad.

Don't kid yourself; Exxon isn't changing a thing. The money's being spent on "energy exploration and production" not research. It 's more dollars thrown at more of the same old same old. They don't see the need to change because, with ever-increasing record profits, what they're doing is working for them in the short term. There is little to no economic incentive for them to change.

I didn't have an MBA concentration because my electives were too diverse! I was interested in lots of topics and didn't feel the need to limit myself for the sake of some artificial designation. Just like no one NOW ever asks what your college major was (I can barely remember mine!), no one will ever EVER ask you what your MBA concentration was when you are done. They ARE impressed with my 4.0 GPA in grad school, though. That was far more important to me because it was something I never achieved any other time or place. Learning to be better at management is a skill it will take my whole life to develop - and I will NEVER master it!

So...you're not an under-achiever at all. You just don't need the tag to make you feel good about who you are and what you're doing. Bravo.

Actually, law faculty don't use much technology at all. Even if you take out the...say, 15-20% that are honestly just a bit older and don't use technology no matter what, we still have an amazingly low technology usage rate. Engaging students via tech would be a whole diferent level.

I have my own opinions on how class environments should or at least could be managed to improve engagement. But that is not a great tactic when working with faculty, truth be told. And I agree that educating the professors might be the most important aspect that needs to be addressed.

Well, as a business, the model makes sense. Liquidity problem + low margins = need for infusion of cash to (hopefully) invest in capital and improve productivity to increase margins.

And the issue here is that you're saying universities don't need to take on debt. Well, they need money. Debt is one way to get money.

Ok...prima fascia your argument makes sense, but WHY? Why should a university, with razor thin "margins" as it is, take on debt if it doesn't need to? Debt = more cost and the cost of higher ed has already been dramatically outpacing inflation for years.

I'm still not convinced it would be THAT hard. You know what they say about assuming...and you never know unless you ask! The worst that could happen is that you find you relaly DO have to fly cross country a few times, but you're already mentally planning to do that anyhow, right? (-:

Well, since the 2nd conference actually paid for my airfare, I can only imagine that it would be complicated to get things switched up. Worst case, if I get the grant to the 1st conference, I will take some crazy combination of flights to get from one place to the other.

You make it sound so simple :-)

Ok, so your airfare is already booked, but could you change your ticket (albeit probably for a fee) and fly directly from one conference to the other? Seems silly to fly all the way back. And why switch suitcases? Just take enough clothes for both OR do laundry in between OR send one suitcase to conference #2 before you go to conference #1, and send conference #1's suitcase home via UPS when you get to conference #2. Easy peasy!

Well, I think it's just one's natural need to receive some kind of validation from others. Other opinions don't matter, on a fundamental level, because I do still derive satisfaction from the photo (I really do). I have it hanging here in my office, in fact, so that when I am typing I just look slightly above my monitor and it's right there. Prime real estate, if you will. But when no one notices I have to admit that part of me wonders why not.

I like the color AND the shallow DOF. And I see that a few people have now commented on Flickr. But why would your opinion of your photo change if few view it and no one comments? If you like it, you like it even if no one else does, right? Other people's opinions of your photos really don't matter!

Yes, I do intend to put up a "regular" shot, though you can see <a href="http://flickr.com/photos/kaiyen/3198026699/in/set-72157612108559309/" rel="nofollow">a very similar one that I already have online</a>. It's from earlier in the evening so the contrast between sky and beach is not as extreme, but it's a start. I was shooting one "normally" before then creating the multiple exposures to create the high dynamic range version.

My wife actually has a degree in Photography, so she enjoys it as well. To be honest, she has a much more creative eye for composition than I do - sometimes too creative, to the point where the shot is actually impossible :-)

No, it's a "standard" zoom (meaning it's kind of a mid-range, not too wide, not too long lens), though I think at its widest setting, where there is a bit of distortion. But a fisheye would have bent the trees at the top pretty severely - the straight one that is all dark would have curved.

I'm a believer that there is a photo around wherever one is located. Sometimes it's one that might not appeal to everyone (street photography, for instance), but it's there somewhere. Thanks for looking :-)

Did you use a fisheye lens? There's a curvey look to the photo. That's a good skill to cultivate - "finding" the photo in an otherwise ordinary scene.

The macro-economic response is that it doesn't matter whether people do realize how badly overstretched they were living or not. At least it doesn't matter right now. We need to implement something to control the labor market and to unlock the credit freeze. Our economy doesn't work without credit. Long term, yes, we need to prevent non-bank banks from existing (such as Lehman Brothers) and regulate the way loans are made.

Personally, I wonder whether people will ever realize how badly overstretched they are. At least beyond the next bubble. As soon as the next boom comes around they will forget.

I still don't like it. Either way, we're spending (or forgiving, in the form of tax credits) LOADS of money we just don't have. We already have a record deficit AND debt, and it's going to get much, much, MUCH worse in the future. People need to feel the pinch - a lot - so they realize how BADLY overstretched they've been living, because it's still a drop in the bucket compared to how overstretched our entire system is. I think we are not nearly out of the woods yet: our entire greatest danger is still a complete collapse of the entire world economic system in a spectacular, never-before-experienced chain reaction.

The key thing is that the spending was without regard to one's ability to afford the repayments (this is a credit-driven economy, so debt is a reality, but one needs to be able to pay off the debt, at least). Spending, in the short term, drives an economy. In the long run, savings will drive investment from banks and other financial institutions (that hold onto your savings), which is even more powerful. But in the short-run individual spending can have more impact. And when no one will lend at all things just go haywire.

"You can’t even create a team of rivals today." You're right, but it's worth taking a moment to consider why.

Obama has created as close to a team of rivals as we've seen in modern history, but it would be impossible for him to pick someone of the opposite party for any of the very top roles simply because "the party" won't let him.

Political parties in this country have strength, power, and reach unparalleled in history. The party structure provides the structure, the money, the legal network, and the clout for a rising, charismatic leader like Barack Obama to reach the upper echelons of power in this country. Unfortunately, no one gets to "the top" in American politics without the involvement and backing of one of the two major political parties.

It's a stale, but effective and very entrenched system. And it's influence is largely why I had not voted for a main party political candidate for president in 16 years - before Obama.

I hope that Obama, despite being unequivocally part of "the system," can continue to rise above it enough to effect real, true, and permanent change in Washington, D.C.

Interesting perspective. I have long had the opposite sense about history - that EVERY particular time is unique and that we are ALL living through history every day. It's the small stuff, accumulated, that comprises the long-term trends, movements, cycles, and times on which history sheds its peculiar light.

My acute sense of living in history was developed from many incidents through which I have lived, incidents that I knew, immediately and without doubt, would be in future history books. The campaign and election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 when I was 11 years old was the first I remember vividly. It was the first election to which I paid attention, and we had many school assignments to help us understand the process and formulate our own opinions on the issues. The Challenger shuttle explosion in 1986 when I was a junior in High School is another "instantly historical" moment for which I have very personal memories. My visit to the Berlin Wall in March of 1989 didn't feel like history at the time, but I was there the week after the man who would end up being the last shot trying to cross to the West was shot. I knew immediately and emotionally in November of 1989 when the wall came down that I was living in history - and I could NOT understand why so many of my fellow college classmates were not as glued to the television as was I. And of course, I remember 9/11/01.

Perhaps my sense of living in history also comes from my belief that every life is a story to tell. As a memory preservation coach who helps people organize and celebrate their memories, I am continually amazed at the rich significance of every person's stories and memories.

We are history. We make history. We live history. What's your story?

Interesting perspective. I have long had the opposite sense about history – that EVERY particular time is unique and that we are ALL living through history every day. It’s the small stuff, accumulated, that comprises the long-term trends, movements, cycles, and times on which history sheds its peculiar light.

I think it shows how INSENSITIVE ecosystems are, really. Each species is just waiting for the right conditions to grow and flourish.

We humans perpetually demonstrate our inability to grasp the complex balances of nature. Now the question is: what problems will removal of the rabbits have on the system's balance?

Excellent photo and interesting description of what it took to create it! Any chance you could post a "regular" shot side by side with the finished product? I'd be curious to see the difference. I've read about HDR imaging on DPS, but don't have Photoshop or a desire to try it myself.

It's nice that you and your wife can go out together. Does she enjoy photography as much as you do?

John and I watched season 1 (although I don't remember his wife dying) and loved the unusual premise. But there was way WAY too much violence (largely gratuitous) and it physically stressed me out to watch the show. Seriously - my hands would be clammy and my heart would race, which is not a good thing before bedtime if you are going to bed to SLEEP.

A couple of reasons. One was just the constraints of the situation - I had a specific lens on me, fixed focal length, so I couldn't zoom. But it's a very sharp lens and it forces me to look at things in very specific ways while I walk around.

I did take a few in a portrait format. However, I really wanted to have the horse's back trailing off towards the side of the frame and yes, I wanted to accentuate the eyes. I don't think I would have rejected the option of a slightly wider lens, though.

I never would have taken this shot, but I like it! I know for sure I would have turned the camera vertical and gotten his whole head in there. What made you decide to frame it the way you did? It makes the horse look much wiser by really emphasizing his eyes.

At one point, the idea was thrown out that a fund be setup that loaned only to people with good FICO scores. Which you think would be how...loans were determined and meted out in the first place, but apparently not.

re: ARMS - average person? Probably not. This was an economist talking :-). But over the last 30 years, rates have apparently dropped from 14% to even 6% or a bit more, right? So technically they would have worked out in the long run no matter what.

You wrote: "...BUT that the incredibly low rates the government is aiming for are not likely (4%? something like that) unless the banks decide to lend and take on that kind of risk again."

4%? I hadn't heard that number as a goal. And I agree, rates are NOT going to get that low (and if they do - heck if they get to 4.75% - I'll be looking into a re-fi myself!).

You also wrote: "Banks are scared of people with FICO scores of 800, since that just represents past credit stability. What if that person loses his job tomorrow because of the economy? Well, that would make that 800 pretty meaningless."

Nope - gotta disagree here. FICO is a measure of more than stability. It measures available credit versus used credit and repayment history, among other (somewhat) mysterious criteria. So someone with a FICO of 800 (I'm not there, but darn close!) has a HISTORY of responsible payments, reasonable use of credit, and sound financial judgment that most likely transcends any one particular financial setback. These are the people to whom banks most WANT to lend because the relative risk is so low with that kind of proven track record.

And you wrote about ARMs: "The funny thing about people going with adjustable rate mortgages is that mortgage rates in the..80s? or so were around 14%. So if you took an ARM back then, and gambled that rates would go down at all, then you’d win out. It’s funny how that is."

But ARMs readjust frequently, often every 5 years depending on the terms. So yes, mortgage rates might have been 14% in the 1980's, but did they really drop drastically enough over that short time span for the average person to profit significantly from the adjustment? Not only that, but that person needs to know when to get OUT of the ARM into a fixed rate, or their short-term gains get quickly eaten by long-term losses.

I still think ARMs are like trying to make money by timing the stock market or winning in Vegas: you might get lucky, but you're much more likely to lose your shirt (or house), even if you do know what you're doing.

With a 45 minute exposure, the amount of time that I am in any one spot is very short compared to the overall exposure. I might be to the right of the truck cab for, say, 1 minute total. I'm there for such a short amount of time and unless I were shining a light on myself it's almost impossible for me to show up. I've done 2 minute exposures where I have walked through them and not showed up, though again I am only ever in one spot for just a fraction of the total time. Kinda freaky, but it works.

I understand why economists want people to spend, but honestly, this push to spend, spend, spend is what got us into this mess in the first place. I was appalled when President Bush's reaction to 9/11 was to tell people to spend without regard to the affordability of their spending. The spending pendulum went WAY too far and now people need to be encouraged to be more frugal and pay down debt.

We don't have much debt - just a reasonable mortgage we can afford and a past LOC balance that we converted to a fixed loan so we could get rid of it (no credit car debt ever here), but we still put the "windfall" of stimulus money earlier this year toward that loan principal. Of course, we did buy a new fridge and new stove this fall, but we had been saving for those items for a year! If there is another stimulus payout, it, too, will go toward the loan principle. A stimulus payout is essentially a gift, and should come with no strings attached.
