Guster, 1.20.2000
Guster at The Edge in Palo Alto, home of the weekly "Teen
Night." Wow, how weird was that. Debut of California Dreamin'
and Medicine 2000. It was cool when I walked up to Brian afterwards,
first time we ever formally met, and he just said
"You're Allan, right?"
Proof you're a hardcore taper: I had my wisdom teeth taken on the
day before. All 4 of them. |
|
Guster/Vertical Horizon/Stroke 9, 1.21.2000
Intriguing bill. Flash-in-pan Stroke 9 headlines, "rock star"
Vertical Horizon next, still-growing Guster "opens." Good
show, nothing special. Nice to see VH out west (this was slight pre-explosion) |
|
Guster, 1.22.2000
This was up at the Mystic in Petaluma. What a long drive, especially
in the back of a Camaro. Show was cool - met Pasty for the first
time, for real, felt all hardcore taping in Petaluma. And damn if
the entire town didn't turn out for the show...see the Setlist

Allette Brooks, 1.27.2000
Night one of the SCN CoHo Concert Series. I organized, booked, promoted,
and produced this series as my winter quarter project for the Stanford
Concert Network. Allette is this great acoustic indie-rock singer/song-writer.
Real nice person, too. |

|
Rubberneck, 2.3.2000
Second show of the CoHo Series. Rubberneck
is this Latin-Funk band out of Portland, and I _loved_ them. Horns,
electric guitar, bass, and drums and just funky and groovy. I really
wish more people had been there to see them. One of my personal highlights
of the series. |
|
McCoy Tyner Trio, 2.5.2000
This is an almost legendary jazz series at Yoshi's up in Jack
London Square, Oakland. McCoy Tyner on keys, Stanley Clark on bass
(wow), and I forget the drummer's name (which makes it sound like
he wasn't good, which would be totally inaccurate). |
|
Victor Wooten, 2.7.2000
Victor Wooten is one of the most bad-ass musicians I have ever
seen. Period. And man he is into FUNK. This was a blast down in Santa
Cruz. Funk flying everywhere and me standing next to the rest of the
band (Regi Wooten, Joseph Wooten, and JD Blair) while Victor had a
33 minute solo. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Neosoreskin, 2.10.2000
Third show of the CoHo Series, and one to
forget. Neo is a punk band, basically, who really didn't feel like
listening to my reminders that the venue was a coffee house. I wanted
to have some variety in the series but this blew up in my face. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Dealership, 2.17.2000
As you can see, the CoHo series took up
most of my time during winter quarter. Dealership is a small trio
out of Berkeley. They were really cool - only had a small bit of original
material, but they agreed to have some fun and try some new stuff.
Good show. |
|
Allison Krauss and Union Station, 2.22.2000
Saw this show with a good friend, and that's always fun. Allison Krauss
has a beautiful voice, and the LBC up in Santa Rosa is nice because
the crowd really appreciates the music. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
The Slip, 2.24.2000
This was the finale to the CoHo series,
and what a show it was. Right before the band went on stage at 10pm,
they said they'd probably play for about 1.5 hours. I was a bit surprised,
and showed it, so they said they'd play longer if the crowd was right.
They played until the CoHo closed at 2AM... |
|
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, 2.25.2000
Random trip down to SoCal. This was a good show, except the crowd
was so uncontrolled as to dampen the experience. UCSD is a nice place....the
"Don't Take that Attitude to your Grave" was top-notch. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, 2.26.2000
Universal Amp. in Hollywood. Awesome show, I was about 10' from
Ben in the pit area. Fight for your Mind - best one I've heard, with
Juan going nuts for his folks who were in attendance. |

|
Guster, 3.2.2000
Guster @ the Fillmore, headlining at last.
Played a really tight, if not spectacular or particularly funny-Guster-y
set. Got to hang out afterwards thanks to Mike, their tour manager,
hooking me and my friend Wes up. Mike rocks. See the after-show
pass.
|
|
Ozomatli, 4.1.2000
First time seeing Ozo, and I was willing to go to the Maritime to
do it. Wow - what a band. The crowd was nuts, just dancing everywhere
- it was a huge party with a dozen guys playing stuff on stage. Just
fun fun fun... |
|
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, 4.15.2000
The previous night, I drove all the way to the city only to find out
the Fillmore KDTU show had sold out minutes before I got there. On
4.15, KDTU put on a show to make up for it...one of my favorite bands.
|
|
John Scofield Band, 4.28.2000
The Agenda Lounge is a bar, with a stage that's the size of a closet.
A small closet. But what a place to see one of the best jazz guitarists
around. He was tearing it up. I await another good show at the Agenda,
to be honest. |
|
Phil Lesh & Bob Dylan, 6.24.2000
I thougth Dylan did a great job. Intelligible, and the guy is a rock
star in the truest sense. Then Phil came out and played a 2-hour set
with no breaks. Just jamming and jamming. I'm not really a big GD
fan, but I was grooving... |
|
String Cheese Incident, 7.21.2000
Starting a full-time job was taking its toll on my concert trips,
as you can tell by the huge gaps in shows. This was my first time
seeing SCI and I was almost in awe of the mellow, chill scene and
just the great vibe. The band was really into the show and the Greek
Theatre, too. They should play Stanford sometime...start more rivalry
with Cal. |
|
Dave Matthews Band, 8.1.2000
With this show, I started going to concerts again, basically.
I think being a part of the DMB community kind of reinvigorated me.
This show was high energy, but blah set. |
|
Dave Matthews Band, 8.2.2000
I thought the setlist this night was way better, but Dave was
the only one hoping around this night. But I got several songs for
the first time live. MMW opened both nights - wish the crowd appreciated
more, and I would've paid double to get Medeski on Watchtower. |
|
Derek Trucks Band, 8.11.2000
So I get to the GAMH, and the taper's section, which is usually
in the balcony anyway, is back another 10', and mics basically touch
the ceiling. Why? Oh, because Phil Lesh had reserved the section for
him and his family. Oh. Okay. |
|
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, 9.8.2000
Best-sounding show at the Greek for me. Ben's crew does great
stuff with his PA and sound reinforcement, really. Other than the
ridiculous traffic getting up to the Greek, it was a nice fun show.
I was a bit scared by all the "F*** Stanford" T-shirts though... |

|
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, 9.14.2000
Actually, Stubb's BBQ didn't give me a ticket,
just a wristband (it _is_ TX after all). Totally unplanned trip to
this show. Got to see the Flecktones with a bunch of people that _really_
liked the Flecktones. That was cool. |
|
Dave Matthews Band, 9.15.2000
Birthday show! And I got a WWYS! :-)
Energy was super, super high. Dave dancing everywhere, but the setlist
was only okay for people not celebrating birthdays.

|
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, 9.16.2000 (early)
This was an in-store in a Borders Books
and Music. Played in the corner of a bookstore, then signing. I have
a picture of me standing between Jeff and Victor. Being permitted
to be in the same photo as Victor was amazing enough... |
|
Dave Matthews Band, 9.16.2000
I was hoping that, like Shoreline II, the
setlist would be a lot better but energy a bit lower. Unfortunately,
the setlist _and_ the energy were downers. The Flecktones saved things
a bit but not much. The insane flying crickets didn't help - at one
point, Bela was soloing and had to spit one out of his mouth...didn't
miss a beat, though. |

|
Brian Cline Band, 9.26.2000
The latest CoHo Concert Series begins, headed
this time by my good friend Wes, who's the SCN director this year.
I'm kind of a "consultant" this fall and helping out with
production at these first shows. The Brian Cline Band is a norcal
alternative/folk/acoustic band. Really fun, and _really_ good. Bummer
the crowd wasn't so receptive. But they are worth checking out. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Will Bernard and Motherbug, 10.5.2000
Second night of the CoHo series. Motherbug
is formerly known as the Will Bernard 4tet. Will is this incredible
jazz guitarist who has a jamband side and this group just tore it
up. Place was really crowded and the good music kept pulling more
people in. |
|
Phish, 10.6.2000
Last 2 Phish shows for a long time...I was
up on the lawn for this one (MO was right before my first paycheck).
Was fine, except they didn't turn on the lawn repeaters (or had them
way down), apparently because of the curfew. There just wasn't enough
sound up there and it was hard to get into the show. Plus, I think
I'm jaded from being so close at so many shows. |
|
Phish, 10.7.2000
A Taper's Ticket became available suddenly
(thanks Joe), and I had a _much_ better time from there. It helped
that the show was simply incredible, of course. So many tremendous
songs that night. Supposedly the last Phish show for a really long
time, and it was a memorable one. |
|
Guster/Barenaked Ladies, 10.11.2000
First time I saw Guster, they were on the
tiny second stage of HORDE '98 at Shoreline. Now they were playing
on the main stage, opening for BNL. That was a really nice bit of
circuitousness or something. It was good to chat with Mike, their
tour manager, as well, just cuz he's a cool guy. BNL put on a good
show, though I was a bit dismayed at how similar the show was to the
ones I saw in 1998... |

|
Pseudopod, 10.12.2000
Third show of CoHo series. Pseudopod is
a band from UCLA who won the iuma.com MusicOMania competition back
in March or April or thereabouts. For a college band, they are incredibly
tight and have a lot of presence. They play up in the bay area quite
often. |
|
moe., 10.14.2000
Felt good to be back at the Fillmore. No
poster, though. some people say that moe. jams _too_ much, and this
was one long, long show. The first set was 1:45, and I knew I was
in for a long night. Great music, but it is weird that moe. couldn't
sell out the Fillmore either early enough or at all to get posters
made... |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Ten Ton Chicken, 10.19.2000
Yes, another CoHo show. Now, if you had
to guess the genre of music for Ten Ton Chicken, you probably would
not guess they are a jam band. And quite a good one. Just four guys
who really like the Dead and Phish and etc, and put on a good, fun
show. I ran board and had a good time. |
|
The Tragically Hip, 10.24.2000
Finally, I saw the Hip. I was so tired that
I almost pulled over while driving to the Fillmore, and I spent about
half an hour sitting and resting at the show, but it was a terrific
night. I was a bit surprised at how many of the Bay Area fans seemed
to be transplanted Canadians, and the crowd was a bit sedate, but
it was a great time. |
|
The Tragically Hip, 10.25.2000
As seems to be the norm, the second night
of a two night stand was tremendous. This show was rocking from start
to finish, and I had much more fun jamming by myself in the back then
I did the previous night. Crowd seemed a bit more into it, as well,
being a bit more loose from the start. I think the Hip might be my
favorite band. |

|
Jazz Mandolin Project, 10.27.2000
Closing night of the SCN CoHo Series, with
JMP. We had some issues with sound (upright bass is hard to mic),
but these guys are just incredible. Jamie, the mandolin player, is
clearly one of the best around but his bassist, Danton and drummer
Greg are clearly perfect partners. There is something special about
seeing great musicians play together. Good job to Wes and the SCN... |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Bruce Hornsby, 11.4.2000
Great show at the BCT up in Berkeley. I
was dead tired, to say the least, but Bruce put on a really chill
but stellar show. His band was absolutely incredible, and Steve Kimock,
who was guesting, did his usual impressive guitar work. |
[Missing Ticket]
|
Vertical Horizon/Nine Days, 11.18.2000
This was "Big Show" for the SCN.
After Stanford beat Cal in Big Game AGAIN, about 1750 people showed
up at Memorial Auditorium for an incredible, end-of-tour show by these
two bands. No matter how big VH gets, no one can ever say that they
don't get the crowd going. It was almost mesmerizing to watch and
listen to all of those Stanford students sing along with the band... |

|
Pat McGee Band, 12.11.2000
PMB in the Last Day Saloon in San Francisco.
Very different than seeing them at the TLA in Philly, I'll say that.
Tiny place, only okay acoustics, and I had my ears blown out, but
I've been waiting a long time to see PMB out on the west coast...click
